The two sat opposite each other in the cloth-covered armchairs by the log fire. The lights and the flickering flames cast a shadow over his head, slightly changing his face.

Melissa turned around and carried on walking to the kitchen, where she opened a cupboard hidden behind the kitchen work-top.

Unable to contain herself, Vicky turned to her left, away from the table, and vomited with ferocity onto the carpet.

Rob said, “You should be in charge, Char, not Mary and Olivia. Mary doesn’t understand finance, and Olivia should be in compliance, dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

After Harriet was introduced to Dean, she and Philip had a chat. Girlie looked at Dean; she had finally made up her mind. The selection was done.



Dean arrived half an hour early on Tuesday. After being introduced to everyone, he sat next to Charlene, behind Olivia. Charlene’s desk was on the end; an aisle separated her section from the next one.

Charlene still held Mary’s eyes as her own face began to become patched with various streaks of dark shadows, which changed to green and black revealing the Spirit’s image.

They sat on the large back bumper with their feet off the ground. Jackie, sitting on the right, held the handle of the boot with her left hand. Mary, on the left, grasped her sister’s hand.

After about five minutes, they went in. Mary peeked into the second bar from behind Jackie, who was screened by a group of people.





Shining the torch inside, they saw crêpe paper wrapped around something. Charlene’s fingers reached inside and gently lifted the object.




Flames started to flicker. The crackle grew  louder, and then the hair violently spit. Vicky moved back. Suddenly, a huge white flame flashed up and leapt towards her.



Chapter 1c


She drove around until she found the shop, which was only five minutes away. The name, Redback Antiques, was above the door. Redback was in bold red and Antiques in bold black.
